Manchester, MAN at a Glance
Manchester was a reasonably small market town that specialised in textiles,
particularly cotton and silk, until the Industrial Revolution shook the Western
World in the 18th century. Manchester took advantage, using new technology to
radically increase production and exports. The city's new found wealth funded
the construction of magnificent Victorian buildings with the Victoria
Baths, one of the best examples. During the inter-war period Manchester
endured a slump, illustrated at the Imperial
War Museum North, before being revitalised as a city at the forefront of
contemporary British sport and culture. Manchester
United FC are one of the most widely supported and successful football teams
in the whole world. They enjoy a rivalry with Manchester
City FC who can count rock band Oasis among their fans. The renowned Halle
Orchestra perform a host of concerts at Bridgewater
Hall.
Manchester is separated from the neighbouring city of Salford
by the River Irwell. It's worth a trip over this waterway to check out the Lowry
Museum, named after the area's most influential artist.
